5 Ways to Prepare and Secure Your Home for a Newborn

Expecting a baby is sometimes fun and sometimes requires that you stay focused and concentrated. But before that little bundle of joy arrives, you need to make sure that your home is ready for the curious youngster. This is not an easy task, and it may require time and organisation, but no matter the amount of work, it will provide a safe and healthy environment for you and your baby. Use these tips as guidance to help you secure and prepare your home for a newborn.

1.    Choose where your baby will sleep

Regardless of having a separate room for your newborn, the first few weeks you will both have to be close to each other. Some parents decide to place the crib near them, right beside their own bed, while others place a baby monitor in the child’s room. Whatever it may be, you will have to make sure your choice works as smoothly as possible. If the crib is near you, make sure you’ve left enough space so that you can get out of the bed. This way you will avoid any unnecessary injury to yourself in the middle of the night when your baby cries.

2.    Prepare to renovate

Depending on the state of your home, renovations may take some time and money, not to mention a lot of cleaning up. Consult with your contractor and an interior designer on how to create the most functional conditions for a family with a newborn. Also, hire an electrician to check the wirings and a plumber to check the pipes. If your finances allow it, insulate your home so you can always have the appropriate temperature inside, and check windows and doors for any damage.

3.    Paint the walls and decorate the baby’s space

If you have a small apartment, don’t worry – you can still create that special spot for your newborn. All you need are some creative ideas and time to set it all in motion. Since one of the activities when preparing for the baby’s arrival is to paint the walls, make sure that products are healthy and without any toxic materials. But just in case, after the paint is applied, open up the windows and let the fresh air in. Some paints leave an unpleasant and irritating smell even after they’ve dried, so it’s better to pay more for high-quality paint and thus ensure the absence of toxic vapours and unpleasant odours.

4.    Baby proof the apartment

All power outlets must be covered, even if they appear to be out of the baby’s reach. Never underestimate the curious spirit of your newborn since through that curiosity they learn and get a sense of their surroundings. Avoid using glass items in the house, and if you have any, like coffee tables or cabinets, consider placing them in some storage, at least until your child learns the boundaries of their surroundings. All sharp edges must be cushioned, even the ones on chairs or on the shelves under the coffee table, as before your baby learns to walk, they will crawl.

5.    It’s always spring cleaning time

Cleaning your home can’t be done superficially when expecting a baby, but it has to be thorough and reach every corner. This may require that you move all the furniture and inhale a lot of dust. So for this one, you should hire a professional cleaning service. But before doing that, make sure that they’re using organic cleaning agents since those aggressive ones tend to linger and stay in the space a little longer. Just in case, when the cleaning day comes, plan to do some shopping or have tea with friends, so you avoid inhaling the dust and smells of big cleaning.

Lastly

Don’t worry about the amount of work ahead, it can actually be relaxing and provide quite the comfort. These types of preparations are also known as nesting and are typical for the woman when expecting a baby. But try and have some fun while doing it, too, and include your loved ones in the action. That way you can all participate in creating a beautiful and safe environment for your little darling.
