My daughter’s birthday is coming up soon. 

My nearly 13-year-old can’t wait to have her first mobile, some skinny jeans, a cropped top and a trip to Starbucks (I blame American shows!) with her close friends. However, I decided she also needed something a bit less ‘typical 13’ and more ‘educational’.

In my hunt for a nice birthday gift for my new teenager, below are my favourite picks for an indoor herb garden kit!

To make this easy, I will feature two types of herb kits: those with grow light and those that rely on natural light.

It is the most hassle-free option I could find as I was keen to avoid having to do three separate purchases: pot, soil and seeds. 

In this kit, you find the vase, the organic soil mix and the seeds. You open up the package and let the fun begin! I went for basil, parsley and chives. Another option is broccoli, radish and rocket sprountings. 

Another attractive feature is the perfect rectangular shape that fits very nicely by our window. Measurements are 40x8x7cm. The white porcelain also goes well in most kitchens and homes.

This cute vase can be reused in the future with different crops. 

Most Colourful Kit — UrbanGreens Mini Microgreens Grow Kit – Ruby Sprouts

This kit offers a splash of colour other than green – nothing wrong with green, but, as they say, variety is the spice of life. So, why not add some vivid pink ruby sprouts? I fell in love with that colour and will be adding this one to my Christmas wishlist. 

Similar to the previous kit, this kit has all you need to start growing your herbs/sprouts: organic mix, seeds and the vase. The shape is also rectangular and great for windowsills, however, this is a smaller model for just one crop. 

This vase can be reused in the future with different crops. 

Best Kit for Little Ones — 5 Little Bears

While this kit was not my final choice for my 13-year-old – she is probably a little too grown-up for it, I fell in love with its cuteness! How cool is this tube + timber stand combo recommended for 3 years and up? What a great option for little ones!

This product is a great space-saving device. The stand is made from sustainable timber and it measures approximately 13x4x12 cm. 

This is an Australian handmade product and the business is owned and operated by a mum-of-five – hence the name 5 Little Bears!  You gotta love supporting a small family business.

This kit contains everything you need the get started – tube, cotton bud, and seed! 

Best Mushroom Kit — Life Cykel Mushroom Box

My kids are one of those who dislike mushrooms.

However, after giving a mushroom kit to my father-in-law, the kids developed a fascination with this crop that grows in a box full of coffee grounds diverted from landfills. Could it be some association with fairy tales? 

Mushrooms need to be regularly sprayed and can live in your kitchen, but make sure they are far from direct sunlight. This kit will harvest up to three times and all can be composted once it reaches the end of its lifecycle.

Not everyone has an abundance of sunlight in their homes! This problem can now be solved with LED technology. A low energy-consuming LED lamp can give your plants the light they need to grow and thrive. Here are some fantastic options for LED indoor herb kit:

This is my favourite kit with lights, as it is an all-you-need type of product with LED lights. It might be a little more expensive than others, but it includes seeds and ‘growing discs’. 

Instead of traditional soil, this kit comes with ‘coir growing discs’ – made from coconut material that expands into the shape of your pot when you add water. That means they arrive in a flat disc shape but expand to reach the perfect pot shape when water is added. The discs provide an ideal environment for roots to grow and thrive. 

The system has a clever irrigation method with plants drawing all their water needs from the reservoir below their roots. Another inclusion is a 250 ml bottle of plant nutrient that will last for a while. 

Best Budget Option (Pot + Light Only) — Greenlife Herb Lamp Growing Kit

One of the downsides of indoor plants is that soil can attract all sorts of creatures that like to inhabit and share that space with your plants’ roots, possibly feeding on them and, eventually, contributing to their end! 

One way of minimising that risk is to go ‘hydro’ or ‘hydroponic’ – which is a fancy name for plants that grow in water!
