Family Car Reviews: Ford Territory

This review is based on my own car which is the Ford Territory SX TX (2005 model). The Ford Territory offers a great family SUV that is suitable for most family activities, yet still drives like a sedan making it pleasant to drive especially in and around car parks.

Based on our Family Car Checklist, here is my review of the Ford Territory as a Family Car.

The Ford Territory comes in both a 5 and 7 seat version. We have the 7 seat version as I wanted to have a car that could take my children’s friends with us when desired. I have had the car for 5.5years and thus far we have been happy with it.

Boot Space

When utilising the car as a 5 seater the boot is enormous and can easily take everything a parent needs. The back seats fold flat making the boot a very large usable space. My pram (rather large) lives in the boot and along with this, it would also accommodate 2 children’s bikes (smaller than 16inch), scooters, helmets, food and more regularly for park visits.

Unfortunately, the boot space disappears when you have all 7 seats up and then you only have a boot around 30cm wide.

I love the ability to open the tailgate in two ways. You can open the entire tailgate making a large enough opening to easily put prams, kid’s bikes and luggage in. Alternatively, you can open only the glass part of the tailgate where you can quickly and easily add shopping and other bags. This also has the added advantage of allowing you to open the glass without losing balls or groceries when on a hill.

Drive

I enjoy how the Ford Territory drives like a normal sedan. It is smooth and has a good turning circle and is easy to park. The car offers great space for the first and second row of seats. While adults can sit in the 3rd row it would be quite squishy with 2 adults.

My Territory does eat quite a lot of fuel however I believe the newer versions are more fuel economic and there are diesel options.

Baby Seats

The Ford Territory has 5 baby seat anchor points so it if you are looking to have a large family it would be able to accommodate you. With the ability to lower the 3rd row completely getting the baby seats secured in the car or taken out is simple as you can easily able to climb into the boot and reach the points required.

Child Safety

The doors can be child locked so that your child cannot open the doors during transport.
The windows can be locked by the driver so that your children cannot open and close them whenever they desire. One aspect of child safety (and comfort!) that is seldom mentioned is protection from UV. Un-tinted windows not only make for a hotter car, but they also let through a high percentage of harmful UV rays, so it’s a good idea to protect your little one’s skin with good quality window tinting.

Do you have a Ford Territory? What could you add to our review of the Ford Territory as a Family Car?
