Cherub Baby Colour Change Glass Bottles and Sippy Cups
Glass bottles for kids? Are they serious?’ may have been the first thought to come to my mind when agreeing to review Cherub Baby Colour Change Glass Bottles and Sippy Cups. I have never tried glass bottle ranges on my kids, and curiosity finally caught up with me.
STAGES:
Cherub Baby colour change glass bottles come in 3 stages: Bottle, Sippy Cup and Straw Cup, covering all the ranges my 10 month and almost 4-year-old are using. The adapters are easy to switch over, and not too many complex parts are involved. The lid from the teat bottle also fits over all adapter parts, making it hygienic when travelling around.
The bottle teat is wide-neck with a peristaltic nipple, and has an anti-colic design. This was important for me to try on my mostly-breastfed and fast gulping 10-month-old, and to my relief it did not upset him. The bottle has also been designed to fit other brand-named teats on it, which means that gone are the days of buying many different bottles in addition to teats!
The Sippy cup spout was easy to insert to transform the bottle for water when trialling out. The water did not spill from it, and the adapter kit made it easy to put handles on to encourage self-drinking.
The third stage, the straw adapter, was a favourite in this household. Both my 10-month-old and almost 4-year-old drank out of this well. The straw-ball weight at the bottom enables drinking from any angle the bottle is held, which is a fabulous feature for the little ones who do not quite grasp the concept of drinking with straw bottles upright.
The best part about the bottle tips being so adaptable for different stages is that our cupboard can be free from many different bottles for different stages.
GLASS FACTOR:
This is the area I was most sceptical of, being the helicopter mum I am, I feared glass breakages that could lead to injuries. Would this bottle really stand the test of time, especially when my 10-month old’s favourite game is ‘drop the cup so mummy picks it up’? Within minutes, he was not afraid to play this game with his new bottle from his high chair. I closed my eyes in anticipation of a glass smash, but to my surprise the silicone sleeve with built in shock-absorbers protected the bottle and it bounced the same as his plastic bottles without a single break.
After doing some research, it turns out that these bottles are made from fancy pants glass. High tempered borosilicate glass is used, and has been used to survive drops and knocks, and also temperatures of up to 600 degrees. This means that they’re also easy to microwave, clean, boil or put in the dishwasher (the silicone sleeve needs to be removed). I know in my household we always prefer heating food and drinks in glass rather than plastic products, so this is a great win!
The glass is also light-weight, and did not feel as heavy as other kids bottles I tend to lug around in my handbag.
HEAT:
A key feature to the bottle is the colour change silicone sleeves. If the colour changes to white, the degree of heat is over 42 degrees. It changes back to its original colour (green, orange or yellow) when under 42 degrees. This helped when I was in a hurry to check if the milk was too hot. For an accurate reading, I found that when heating the bottle, the sleeve is to be removed and put on straight after to detect the heat. It should also be noted that the sleeve must not be microwaved when heating the bottle.
I will continue to use these bottles for my children, knowing that they are drinking out of safe and easily adaptable bottles. The only challenge that lies ahead is solving the bickering over who gets what colour sleeve each day!
