My Underpants Rule! Children’s Book
As parents, one of our most important and difficult jobs lies in protecting our children without compromising the carefree feelings that accompanies childhood. For this reason, it can be difficult to discuss topics around personal safety and protection.
My Underpants Rule takes a very serious topic and presents it in a fun, engaging way for children. I enjoyed reading this story with my children and felt comfortable throughout the entire book and with the messages it covers. The book gains your child’s engagement early on with a few funny introductory pages that talks about the names of your private parts and the noises they make. Once they have the engagement; they create a simply rhyme for the children to learn which utilises heavy repetition both in the rhyme and throughout the book to reinforce the message that What’s under my pants belongs ONLY to ME!
Much of the book then covers specific situations, asking the children a question around what you should do in different situations. The Scenario questions help your child understand what they should do in certain situations including an understanding on when it may be appropriate for a safe grown up to provide help. (e.g. medical treatment, toilet accident etc.)
What I love the most about My Underpants Rule, is that it eliminates uncertainty without going into the details behind why it is so important to protect yourself. This helps empower the child with the knowledge of how to behave in difficult situations without compromising their rosy coloured outlook on life.
For parents, the book helps to opens up the discussion around protecting your body and depending on your child’s personality, you will find important questions emerging during the reading or straight after. For me, as a mother, the book provided a reassurance that I have helped my children know the right/wrong way to act in certain situations and to reinforce the message of who they should go to for help. Not only am I the only one who thinks it is a good book, it is used and recommended by top agencies including the Victorian Police, Sydney Children’s Hospital, WA Department of Education, SA Department of Child Development and Education and NSPCC (UK’s largest child protection agency)…If you could use help or reassurance around this difficult topic, why not get a copy of My Underpants Rule to start the discussion.
