Bag of coffee beans and cup of espresso coffee

The Best Coffee Subscription for Busy Parents

No one needs coffee as much as busy parents, and we need it to be delicious! (Especially mums… if we’ve been avoiding coffee during pregnancy – I think after missing out for 9 months we deserve a bit better than Blend 43!) Having kids means that it can be harder to head out to the cafe, and so delicious coffee at home is a small luxury that’s worth having.

But getting high-quality, fresh coffee directly from a roaster can be a real hassle. Getting to the supermarket is hard enough, without having to make an extra trip to a coffee roaster to get fresh beans. Who has the time for that?

So we went out looking for a coffee roaster who could send us freshly roasted coffee every month, without the hassle. Here’s what we were looking for:

#1 Delicious coffee (obviously)
#2 Convenient delivery
#3 Reasonable prices
#4 Ethical coffee and company
#5 Delicious coffee (I think we mentioned that already, but just to be sure… ?)

After tasting lots of different coffees we decided that, well, there is a lot of delicious coffee out there! Once you start buying coffee from coffee roasters, it’s hard to go back to stale supermarket beans. So even though some beans were better than others, it was hard to pick the best coffee just from the taste alone.

Next, we went looking for convenient delivery. Most coffee roasters had decent websites that we could buy from, but not all of them had monthly subscriptions. Even though ordering on their websites might seem easy, it’s just another thing to have to remember to do. So we wanted a service that would deliver to us automatically every month. This helped cut the number of potential coffee roasters down, but it was still a big list. There are lots of coffee subscription services out there!

Pricing was a different story because we could only find one coffee roaster who had reasonable prices. This wasn’t because they were the cheapest, it’s because they were reasonably priced no matter how much we wanted to buy. Nearly all coffee roasters had a reasonable price for 1kg bags, but high prices for smaller 250g bags. We could only find Roasted On who uses “flat rate” pricing, so you pay the same rate regardless of how much you buy.

The owner, Nick, explained why he did this: “all my customers love getting coffee delivered every month, but their usage varies so much. My prices are simple and fair for everyone. I’m not the cheapest, and I’m not the most expensive. But I am the fairest.”

Before we could recommend Roasted On we wanted to make sure they were selling ethical coffee and were decent people to deal with. We asked Nick why the coffee he was selling wasn’t “Fair Trade”. He told us “Like most high-quality roasters, I sell specialty coffee, and the price coffee roasters pay for specialty coffee is much higher than what we could buy Fair Trade coffee for. Farmers that are growing coffee that tastes this good get high prices for their crops.”

We’re are slowly realising how much plastic our family uses every week, and we’re trying hard to cut back. We were impressed to see that Roasted On allow their customers the chance to have their own coffee bag that we can send back each month to get refilled. They write customers’ names on the bags and include the envelope and stamps with each order, so it’s easy to do. Even for us busy parents! The opportunity to reduce the amount of plastic our kids will have to deal with is something we really liked.

And yes, Nick at Roasted On definitely has delicious coffee. He sells single-origin coffee that varies depending on the season. So if you love coffee and want to have a little luxury in your busy life, then we can recommend Roasted On for a monthly coffee subscription – https://roastedon.com.au
