The Kids’ Bedroom Cleaning Checklist
You know how it goes… you ask your kids to clean up and after a few minutes they will say it’s all done!
It can be frustrating, but as a parent, there are ways to empower your children to complete a simple task like cleaning their room and they will do it the way you want it done.
A bedroom cleaning checklist is the perfect start to helping little ones get their messy room into shape.
Make sure to be patient, it is a virtue as they say, your kids may not get it right the first, do not fret they’re still learning and will be good at it soon!
Here’s the deal:
It is essential to show your kids how to do things before giving them the cleaning checklist. (Again, don’t expect to get things right the first time!)
We have created this comprehensive cleaning checklist for your kids’ bedroom.
Let’s have a quick look!
Clean Your Room
- Bed made?
- Clothes or towels on the floor?
- Put away books, papers and toys.
- Clean the floor of any debris.
- Bring any dirty dishes to the kitchen.
- Empty the rubbish bin.
This is the cleaning checklist posted on my kids’ rooms. I give them bonus points if they vacuum or dust the surfaces inside their rooms, meaning they are rewarded for cleans that are not just superficial.
It is essential to make the checklist clear and transparent for younger kids to understand and to avoid confusion as to what counts as a “clean” bedroom.
Ready, Set, Get Your Equipment
To master the bedroom cleaning checklist, you will need one of the following.
- Trash bags and boxes
- Fresh pillowcases and bedsheets
- Microfiber wipes
- Duster
- Vacuum
- Broom and dustpan
Once you have got your hands on the above, let us move onto the method.
5 Easy Steps That Can Help Your Kids’ Bedroom Cleaning

1. Sort the belongings
Trash bags and boxes are needed to sort out the junk from the valuables in your child’s room. Choose high-quality rubbish bags to avoid tear-offs and spills which can make the bedroom floor even dirtier. Boxes are also important if you want to train your kids some basic decluttering techniques. Sort boxes by usage intent, it is a great idea to label them with “keep” and “throw” before handing them the boxes.
2. Put everything in their designated areas
Put away the books, drawing materials and toys in their respective places. Clear the study table and reorganise the bookshelf. Make your kids understand the importance of putting away things in their designated areas to maximise space and storage.
3. Change the bedsheets
Prepare the fresh pillowcases and bed sheets before they start cleaning. If we’re practising good hygiene and sanitation pillowcases and bedsheets need to be changed once a week. Teach your little ones that by Keeping the bed clean they can prevent germs and viruses that may make them sick.
4. Vacuum
I give bonus points for those who do arduous tasks such as vacuuming! Kids love the reward and it encourages the smaller ones to get on board too.
5. Finish up!
Make sure the floor has been swept, dirty dishes are taken to the kitchen, bed made, floor clean and everything put away before you tell them the work is done. Make sure you save the reward for last, hard work sure does pay off kids.
What task should you not let your kids do when cleaning their bedroom?
Creating their own cleaning supplies
It is dangerous to allow kids to create their own cleaning supplies. Some cleaning products (even organic) produces toxic fumes when mixed. In the hands of the undereducated cleaning chemicals can damage expensive surfaces.
Bathroom cleaning

Bathroom cleaning is quite a big task. Do not leave it to your kids. Wet bathrooms can be a nightmare for little feet, to avoid slippage and literal breakages we do not advise that children should be left to clean the bathroom alone.
Supervision is essential to guide your children on the proper way to do things and to avoid accidents.
Your Turn
Do not be too strict on following the checklist.
Your children are in the process of learning. It is essential to let them learn naturally and discover new things on their own.
This checklist should be a helpful guide to accompany tasks like cleaning a messy or cluttered bedroom.
In the end, what matters the most is learning and enjoyment.
Giving your kids a small task is a good way of training them to become a responsible adult in the future.
Keeping your child’s bedroom cleaning checklist simple and easy to understand is recommended to avoid confusion.
Positive reinforcement is a great way of encouraging children to want to complete the checklist every week.
Make cleaning a game! (It works with my kids)
The goal is to draw their interest in cleaning and finish the task.
Show your kids what to do before they start the cleaning spree.
Moreover, safety should be a priority. Do not include risky tasks in the cleaning checklist.
Again, do not raise your standards too much. Sometimes you need to close the door and let your kids do their best.
Good luck & happy cleaning!
