Edifier R12U Speakers

I am always a little sceptical when someone shows me a small sized speaker and promises that they will sound good, so when asked to review the Edifer R12U Speakers I was slightly worried.

I know technology has come a long way from when I was listening to cassette tapes with my Walkman, which I had won through a Dolly competition (it was shaped like a scuba diving mask – soooo cool), or the Discman I had that you couldn’t actually move otherwise it gouged huge marks in my discs. But I still don’t really trust small speakers.

I was assured the Edifier R12U speakers would be different… but I wasn’t so sure…

Let’s start with the basics. The Edifier R12U speakers are small, not tiny but definitely small. They are USB powered speakers. This means that they do need a power source to run. This can be through a plug into a wall socket, through a computer or any other power source with a USB plug connection (have you seen the wall plugs with USB port that are on the market now?). The speakers then connect to your device through a 3.5mm AUX cable. For those of you who aren’t sure what that is – it’s the long pointy plug like on a set of headphones.

This means that the speakers can be plugged into any music playing device that you can plug headphones into. How brilliant is that? It definitely makes these speakers flexible in what you can use them with!

edifier_r12U_speakers_reviewThe speakers themselves have a volume control dial which goes from just hearing it – to comfortably loud. Given their size they won’t provide a volume that will knock your head off – but I see this as a good thing. They also have a headphones connection port if you did want to listen to your music a little more privately. The set I had to review were a very sexy red colour which I absolutely loved and the overall look and design of these speakers is really sleek and attractive. They wouldn’t look out of place connected to your iPod, your laptop or your phone.

I’m sure all that sounds great, but how did they perform…

I found that the sound they produce is crisp and clear. Connected to both my phone and my laptop there wasn’t that tinny, thin sound that other smaller speakers I have encountered seemed to make. While the bass won’t make the ground shake it is still good considering the size of the speakers which also look attractive. I think the volume level the speakers reach is ideal for children and teens, the sound produced is perfect without being damagingly loud. I really liked that the speaker attached to the sound source via the 3.5mm AUX cable as it meant that I could connect it to my phone (Samsung), my iPod, my laptop, my iPad, Master 7’s cheap tablet and Master 5’s LeapPad. I wasn’t limited at all by what device I could use it with. They are really light and take up only a little room making it easy to take them with you when travelling or out and about. The cords are long enough that you do not have to have both speakers sitting next to each other. With my laptop I prefer to place one right over to one side of my desk and the other on the opposite side. There is enough room in the cords to do this comfortably on my reasonably wide desk (I need space to handwrite notes etc for Uni).

These speakers would make an awesome Christmas gift for anyone who loves their gadgets and technology but needs a little extra oomph with the sound every now and again.

The Edifier R12U come in three different colours, sexy red, flawless white and executive black ensuring they will blend in with any décor. Available from the Australian online store: http://www.edifier.com/au/en/ While you are there why not check out the other speakers available – with such quality in these little pocket rockets I can only imagine that the rest of the range is quality at its best too.

As I sign off from this review listening to a little old school INXS I can confidently recommend the Edifier R12U to anyone who wants quality compact speakers that are versatile, look great, feel great and most of all sound great. Master 7 seems to think that these speakers are his now… I’m not so sure about that…
