Home Decoration Tips for Large Families

Having a big happy family is a true gift in life, where there is always someone to help you and have your back. However, no matter how much you support and love each other, sometimes life under one roof could get tight. Things can easily pile up and create mess, which will only make your home smaller. In order to lead a peaceful life with your big family, you should do your best to keep everything in place and have enough room for everyone.

Stay Away from Clutter
The most important thing to remember is a clutter-free home. Gather up your family and make simple rules of keeping everything organized and at its place; avoid leaving knick knacks on the surfaces of tables, dressers and floors; have everybody have a habit of cleaning after themselves; and never ever keep things you do not need in your home. If you follow these rules and everyone behaves accordingly, your home will stay clean and spacious and no one will feel stressed or claustrophobic.

Light Colors and Stripes
No matter how big your home is, you will need some help from illusions and tricks to help you make it even bigger. Paint all the walls in your home in some light shades of your favorite colors. Soft colors, such as pastel ones, beige and white can greatly open up the space, leaving it airy and comfortable for everyone. Of course, you can add some bold colored details, but never go too big with those. Also, stripes are another great way of expanding the area. Choose rugs or drapes with stripes but in some neutral colors, and the room will immediately change its proportions.

Open Shelving
Another great way to provide more space in your home is opening up all the shelves. For example, if you have lots of cabinets in the kitchen, you should take the doors off of some of them and embrace the open concept. This concept will visually enlarge your kitchen and you get the chance to display your decorative dishes or fun mugs and glasses. Also, use this concept wherever you can, such as in living room to show off your family collection of books or in the bathroom where you are making everything more accessible and a small bathroom becomes larger instantly.

Alternative for Chairs
When your family has more than four members, it can be tricky to provide everyone with enough chairs; especially if other family members like visiting for holidays. To resolve this seemingly minor problem, you should opt for some alternatives. Set up a common and simple outdoor piece of furniture into your dining room – a bench. Benches are not as restrictive as chairs, and can bear lots of people at the same time. This way, more people can fit at your dining table for a delicious family dinner. Also you can play with variety of uncommon indoor furniture, such as lazy bags, small ottomans and floor cushions and turn your living room into a cozy place for chatting over a cup of coffee with a soft comfy seating.

Bunk Beds
Having lots of children is a blessing, but accommodating all of them could be tricky, especially if they share one room. The best solution for this situation is setting up bunk beds. Every child adores bunk beds because it offers them various playing possibilities, and it can free up floor space. Use that extra space for some additional storage units, or simply leave it for your children to play there.

Lots of Storage Options
Big family equals lots of stuff. All those things have to be stored somewhere; otherwise you will end up jumping over piles of clothes and toys. Seize every single opportunity of turning something into a storage area. Your living room should have a big elegant dresser with lots of drawers for each family member and their everyday things. Also, set up a few decorative bowls on it for everyone’s keys, glasses and other accessories. Make sure to have lots of shelves and hangers in your closets so everyone can easily organize their clothes and shoes and utilize the space under the beds where your children can keep their toys and games neatly stored into plastic bins and baskets.

If you are patient and creative enough, overcoming all the obstacles is a piece of cake. There certainly is enough space for everyone; you all just need to stay organized and diligent.
