How to Design a Fun Kids Room Full of Colour and Life
What colours did you have in your room as a kid? Whether you had a bright yellow feature wall, or preferred softer blues, colour can help inspire, excite and soothe us – especially in small spaces. That’s why it’s important to pick out the right colour for your little one’s room!
If it’s time for a redesign to create a space that is as colourful and full of life as they are, it can be hard to know where to start!
Time is precious, and you may not have enough of it to do the redesign in a single weekend, so focusing on one area of the bedroom at a time may be the way to go. Here are some ways to bring some life and colour to each area of your kid’s bedroom.
Go all out with colour for the walls
If there’s one room you can avoid neutral colours on the walls, it’s your kids bedroom! If the idea of painting the entire room fills you with dread, then opt for a feature wall. Paint isn’t your only option! Have fun with patterned wallpaper to really add an element of fun.
If painting isn’t an option, there are plenty of other ways to add colour to their walls. Decal stickers are a great alternative and are easy to change when your kids decide they’ve outgrown their favourite dinosaurs or characters. Wall decals come in many different designs, including floral, animal, island, and ocean.
If you’re not sold on wall decals, you can always allow your kids to hang up posters, a decorated world map to sneak in some learning, or a colourful tapestry – these can all really bring a neutral-coloured wall to life.
Add some colour with a bed or new bedspread
Whether your little one has graduated from a crib to a big kid bed, or they’re simply ready for an upgrade, beds provide the perfect opportunity to add colour to a kid’s room. Kids’ bed frames usually come in a variety of styles and colours, creating the perfect centrepiece for the room. You can also add in some colourful, matching bedside tables.

If you’re not in the market for a new bed, an easy way to add a pop of colour and update their space is with quilt sets and cushions. Go for a colourful pattern, or even get a customised cover of their favourite characters or TV shows. You can also go for fun and funky throw rugs or pillows!
Get practical with colour-coded storage
When thinking of how to add some fun into your kid’s room, you might not think of storage straight away. While it’s practical, storage can feel a little uninspired, but you can make it fun by colour coding it. Buy storage baskets and boxes in a variety of colours and assign different items to be stored in them. For example, red can be the colour for toys, yellow for crayons, green for hair ties, and so on. By doing this, you can add colour to your kids’ bedrooms, organise, and clean up at the same time. It’s a win-win!
Brighten up the windows with colourful curtains
Curtains are a great, budget-friendly way to brighten up your little one’s space. Plus, it’s easy to change them out as they grow and change their tastes! You can add a little colour co-ordination into the room by simply matching the curtains to the quilt set, or opt for a bright pattern that complements the colour of their feature wall.
From a practical standpoint, invest in a set of colourful blackout curtains to help your kiddo get a good night’s sleep.
Colourful rugs
An easy way to add colour to the floor of your kid’s bedroom is with a bright rug. As well as adding a splash of colour to the room, you’re also giving your kids a comfy space to sit on and play, protecting your floors underneath from damage (especially spills). Try and coordinate their rug choice with other colours in the room. Opt for bright patterns, or a matching colour to really bring the room together.
Colourful lights and glow-in-the-dark stickers
You might not have thought about including the ceiling as an area to add colour to, but it’s one not to overlook. There’s bound to be nights where your child isn’t sleepy at bedtime and they’ll be lying and staring at the ceiling – so why not make it colourful and fun for them?
Colour-changing smart light bulbs are a fun and modern way to add colour to their bedroom, and they can be set up and controlled through an app. If your little one likes looking up at the stars or has an interest in astronomy, you can go with the classic choice of adding glow-in-the-dark star stickers to the ceiling.

Whatever theme and colour your kiddo loves – make sure you embrace easy changes that will grow with them through all their hobbies and interests.
