How To Effectively Conduct Employee Evaluations
We’ve all found ourselves in a situation where we aren’t sure if we’re doing our job to the best of our ability, whether it be big or small. Many people will continue in the hope that their work is acceptable, and many will take a positive stance and seek help if they don’t understand. However, ensuring your workforce is efficient and performing up to company standards is vital for business growth, and one of the best ways we can do this is by performing employee evaluations.
There are many ways to conduct a performance review, and choosing the right one to guarantee it will be effective is something many companies overlook but is in fact hugely important. It can be the deciding factor in your business growing and going into liquidation.
What Is An Employee Evaluation?
Very simply, an employee evaluation is a performance review of an individual or team. This reviewing process will give both positive and constructive feedback which when collated will give a list of targets or goals to complete by the next evaluation. Whilst many companies already operate with an employee evaluation process, there are plenty that don’t. Understanding that this process is vital and will not only help your company grow, but it will also improve workplace relationships, team morale, and shows that you care for the people that are working for you.
Make It Worth Their While
Choosing the right time to reward your employees can really make a difference in their attitude to working for the company, not only can it increase confidence in the workplace, but it can also increase the happiness of individuals and everyone around them. On top of rewards, having a benefits system for your staff that they can access all year round will make them feel valued and create a sense of care. One of the easiest ways your employees can access their benefits is through their mobile phones. Having an app for your business that allows employees to evaluate benefits, compare them alongside others, and choose the ones that actually suit them, all from the touch of a finger will make them feel valued and create a stronger workforce. With the convenience of it all, there is no reason for them not to be more fond of their employment.
How Often Should You Hold An Employee Evaluation?
This requires an understanding of what you want from your employees and what kind of evaluation you’ve decided to use as a performance review.
Daily
A supervisor or manager could hold a team meeting every morning before the workday begins. In this meeting, the goals or targets can be announced and a discussion can be had regarding the previous day highlighting everything that was positive, and some things that can be worked on. If an individual appears to be struggling, giving some positive feedback in front the team can be an efficient way to boost morale and confidence.
Weekly
Often used in the hospitality industry and for people who are in their probationary period, this is a brilliant way to let your staff know how they are getting on in the short term. When in a training period, being able to give constant feedback is a brilliant tool to give confidence and ensure that the job at hand is being completed correctly. In the hospitality industry, having a weekly target meeting is important to let the team know if they are performing well or need to work a little harder.
Monthly
This is a method that’s more commonly used amongst businesses that involve a sales team, some even split the year up into four quarters and have a quarterly review. It’s this kind of review that’s good when applying the ‘Targets and Results’ style of evaluation, which is based on giving an employee a list of targets they need to achieve within a certain time frame. Then the next month or quarters targets can be assessed based on the previous results and anything else can be discussed.
Yearly
A brilliant way to assess each and every individual within your company. It’s within these meetings that things such as a pay-review can be discussed if there are any promotions that have become available, and the next years’ targets and figures.
How Can I Make Employee Evaluations Effective?

Understanding how to get the best out of your employees is an important step to getting the most out of your company. There are many cases where employers forget that the individuals they hire deserve to be treated well and not like a number. So when we’re conducting an employee evaluation there are a few things we need to remember.
Be Fair
The key to getting the most out of any staff member is being fair and relatable. Most individuals know when they have done something wrong and will more often than not be remorseful. There’s no point in handing out heavy punishments if your employee is apologetic, it will only lower their confidence. Finding a constructive way to help them not make the same mistakes again will improve confidence and overall give you a better employee.
Have Achievable Goals
Setting out a list of goals for an employee is a brilliant way to track how they are doing, but having targets that are unachievable won’t help anyone. Ensure that every goal is within reach of the individual, this way if the target is reached you have a happy employee that’s willing to work hard, and a company that’s succeeding.
Have A Clear List Of Goals
The worst thing is having a big list of targets that don’t make much sense to anyone apart from the boss. Make sure that everyone is speaking the same language.
Don’t Be Negative
No matter who you are, having someone telling you that you are no good does absolutely nothing for your confidence and will reduce productivity. If there is something you would like an employee to work on then think about how you can say it in a constructive manner, this will make them feel as though they have something positive to work towards.
Be Approachable
There’s nothing worse than fearing your boss or manager. Having a good working environment will mean you have happy, productive workers, and this is the first step to having a successful company.
All things considered, to have an effective employee evaluation strategy, you need to make sure that it’s clear, positive and within the reach of your workers. Follow the guidelines and make sure that your workforce is confident and happy and you’ll be well on your way to a more bountiful business.
