Working together to plan and prepare for a potential calamity is everybody’s responsibility and protection.
There are many things you can do to become better prepared for the unexpected. Here are a few things to consider in keeping your family safe.
Emergency Plan
Keep your family safe by developing a family emergency plan to be prepared for whatever comes your way. Every family should be talking about what to do in case a serious emergency happens. Be composed in preparing your plan so that will not make your children and elderly scared. Emergency plans should include your complete address, phone contacts of police, fire station, school, work and relatives. Keep extra batteries or buy solar power chargers to keep your electronics working in case of a power outage. Plan the quickest escape route inside your home. Make sure that every member of the family understands the escape route. You also have to prepare for emergency meeting spots. One should be near your home, outside your neighbourhood and out of town just in case you need to evacuate. Make sure to put your entire important document in a sealed plastic bag and keep them in a waterproof and fireproof bag or box. Don’t forget to include your family pet in your emergency plan. They are also included to be kept safe. Make sure to have the necessary food and things for them and always prepare a pet carrier. Share tasks and responsibilities so that everyone is fully aware and no one will be left out in case of emergencies.

Prepare and Maintain Emergency Kits
Having a disaster supply kit for emergencies should be prepared on hand because this may help you keep your family safe during calamities. Supplies you store should be for at least three days’ worth. Plan to stock enough food and other supplies and customize your kit to meet your family’s specific needs like important medications, infant diapers, and formula and of course pet supplies. You should also prepare to store a gallon of water for every person for drinking and sanitation purposes. Other things that need to be inside the kit are a flashlight and extra batteries, first aid supplies, whistles for help signals, several clothes, face masks, tools for utilities, sanitary supplies or toiletries, sleeping bags, and blankets. Store all the things you need for emergencies in a waterproof container and should be put near your door to keep you on the go. It is important to make sure that your emergency supplies are in good condition. Discard and change the supplies you’ve stored every six months.
Keep your Children Informed and Aware
You should always keep your children aware of everything that is happening in your surroundings. Parents must explain to children very well how any disaster that could cause damage not only to people but also to anything. Talk about typical emergencies that children can relate to, such as electricity and water outage. Site several disasters that could possibly happen within your community. Teach children to recognize the warning signs for disaster preparedness. Discussing disasters ahead of time lessen the fear and anxiety and let them know how to respond. You should also teach your children how and when to call for help. You can make emergency charts just in case your child doesn’t know how to read yet. Pictures may help them identify the right number to call. For children of the right age, they can take first aid and CPR courses which can help other people too. Learning can be fun but it is definitely beneficial.
Protect Your Property
With different climates across the country, it’s hard to predict when the next disaster will strike. It is also important to protect your home from natural disasters to keep your family safe. Make sure gutters and downpipes are frequently checked and clean. If there are loose limbs of trees, it should be cut down right away to prevent accidents. House cracks and leaks should be monitored.
Although there is often little that can be done to prevent emergencies and disasters, people can do something to reduce the effect of it. It is important to know how to prepare for several threats from anything that might possibly occur. This doesn’t only save your property but it also helps us save the lives of our family.
