How to Make Your Wardrobe More Sustainable
We live in a world where it’s extremely easy to get access to affordable and fashionable garments. But is this really a good thing?
Also known as fast fashion, today’s fashion industry goes through several cycles a year, pushing new designs on customers every season. This way, big brands make sure they’ll have huge sales (even with low-cost products) and focus their efforts on stocking their shelves instead of caring more about quality and durability.
As a result, the environmental impact is extremely damaging and there are worrisome allegations about child labour practices that shouldn’t sit well with responsible buyers. Not to mention that, by supporting fast fashion, we also teach our kids it’s OK to bury our head in the sand and avoid taking responsibility.
To avoid this troublesome outcome, let’s see how each and every one of us could have a more sustainable wardrobe.
Try Renting Fancy Clothes
We all have at least one dress or elegant outfit that sits in the closet, waiting to see the daylight once more. Sadly, this is the type of outfit that only works for fancy events (like elegant parties, weddings, cocktail events, and so on) and you can’t wear it twice in front of the same people.
So, more often than not, you end up wearing it once and then storing it in your closet until you decide to donate it (which is not an easy decision considering this type of outfit is usually expensive). But now, everything can be solved, and you get to save quite some money, by renting out an outfit for a few days.
Not only will this reduce your expenses consistently, but it also opens up the door to diversity.
Moreover, you can hire dresses in Sydney that fit the current fashion trends for any type of event. This way, you’ll look fabulous every time and you won’t ever have to worry about wearing the same outfit twice!
By renting, you’re actively reducing your carbon footprint on the environment and create more space in your closet!
Do a Clean Sweep Once a Year
Sometimes, we end up with a lot of things in our closets and other storage areas, even with a rigorous shopping process. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have a pre-established week or month
(I like to do it in February or March) when you ask everyone to check their closets looking for things they don’t wear anymore.
The rule should be that, if they didn’t wear it in the last year, it shouldn’t stay in the closet anymore. And, it should apply to any type of item from clothing to footwear to toys. It’s also a good idea to have the kids think more responsibly about the things they want.
Repair Clothes
The fast fashion industry makes it extremely easy to discard slightly damaged clothes and go buy new ones. But we shouldn’t be so quick to throw away items that can be repaired! It’s easy, it doesn’t take long, and it’s a great way to make your garments unique in a world where everyone wants to look the same.
Moreover, by teaching yourself new skills (like sewing or knitting), you keep the brain young and engaged.
In the end, a more sustainable wardrobe is an easy method to do your part for the environment and teach the kids about the power of action. It’s also fun and educational, as it allows you to learn new things and get involved in the world that surrounds you.
