How to Stay Fit When You’re a Stay-at-Home Parent
While many people think that stay-at-home parents have it easy, they are definitely wrong. Being a full-time parent is very demanding and time-consuming and it’s very hard to schedule long runs or gym sessions. However, no matter how busy you are, there are some tricks that will allow you to get some exercise even during your busiest days.
Wake Up Early
If you try hard enough, you can come up with hundreds of excuses why you can’t do your afternoon workout. However, when you wake up early, these excuses disappear. And since you need only about thirty minutes of vigorous exercise every morning, you can easily get enough sleep, work out and finish before your kids wake up for breakfast and school!
Work Out with Kids
While this is a great solution to your workout issues, it’s not easy to get kids interested in exercise, especially when it comes to teens. However, if you notice that your kids respond well to physical stimulation, make sure to include them in your workout. If your kids are young, they can get building blocks to lift and imitate your movements. Older kids can get their own light weights or filled-up water bottles and join you in your strength exercises. Most of the time, you’ll have a lot of fun and plenty of laughs working out together and you’ll always have your kids in your sight.
Try Short yet Explosive Workouts

For many of us, it’s basically impossible to get a good workout at home, but don’t despair. If you have older kids and some extra time, make sure to set aside a short hour to hit the gym and get a nice workout in. Crossfit is one of the best choices because these workouts can be short yet very demanding—perfect for when you’re short on time. Also, Crossfit classes have all the necessary gear, so all you need to bring is your quality Crossfit shoes and you’re ready to sweat it out and get ripped. When you get home after a workout like this, you’ll feel de-stressed and proud of your daily work.
Invest in some Home Gym Equipment
If going to the gym is not possible, you can bring the gym to you. All you need is a few basic equipment pieces and you can easily have a nice workout at home. A set of dumbbells won’t take up too much space, yet it will open up a world of new exercises. If you have space, a cardio machine is also a great addition to your home. In case a treadmill is too much, grab a good fitness mat and get ready for some pilates or other floor exercises.
Have Dance Parties
Have you seen all those dancers and their bodies? Well, they are living proof that dancing is a great physical activity. So, grab your kids, blast some fun tunes and have a dance party. You can do it freestyle or you can find online dance aerobic videos and get a real workout while your kids do their own moves.
Everything Adds Up
If you’re having an especially busy or stressful day and you can’t spare any time for a real workout, you can still squeeze in some activity. Remember that every exercise counts! For instance, take extra one or two climbs up the stairs when doing chores or incorporate some lunges and squats while you cook dinner or puck up toys. It might not seem like much right now, but all of these activities add up and at the end of the day, you’ll have a full workout finished!
Just because you must not neglect your kids, it doesn’t mean you can neglect your own health and look. With some imagination and good planning, you can definitely stay in great shape as a stay-at-home parent.
