10 Song Ideas for a Labour Music Playlist

I’ve never been a big fan of Birth Plans, at least, not the detailed version of it as there can be so many unknown factors. But music is different, especially if you are the kind of person who gets distracted and entertained by it! So, yes I have always been keen on a labour playlist.

Now, with Bluetooth gadgets, a phone and music streaming services, it is so much easier than when I gave birth and had to rely on a CD! With artificial intelligence, you don’t even need to get organised beforehand all you need is your voice to command Siri, Google and Alexa!

“Alexa, play …”

If you need some song inspiration, here are my top 10 picks for music for a labour playlist:

1. Kokomo, The Beach Boys

“Aruba, Jamaica, oh I want to take ya Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama. Key Largo, Montego, baby why don’t we go”

Yes baby rather than being in hospital and me pushing you out of my vagina or the doctors cutting a bloody (literally) deep incision on my tummy, why don’t we go to the beach! OK! Beach dreams aside, this is a nice relaxing song with lots of positive vibes!

2. Sex on the Beach, T-Spoon

After all, it all starts with that! Despite not being a big fan of sticky sand sticking ‘you know where’, this is a fun and happy song.

3. Under Pressure, Queen and David Bowie

(Some people might want Vanilla Ice, but I will always be Queen and Bowie tragic, no Ice, Ice for me baby!!!) Beach mood is great, but let’s face it, pressure is ON! “Pressure pushing down on me. Pressing down on you, no (wo)man ask for”.

4. Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd

During labour, music is great, but drugs are greater!!! Lucky it is not a matter of either or! We can have both and we all need to feel ‘comfortably numb’. “There is no pain you are receding. A distant ship smoke on the horizon. You are only coming through in waves. Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying” – I am saying ‘give me the f…ing drugs!!!

5. Baby One More Time, Britney Spears

Drugs have kicked in (phew!) and it’s time to relax (as relaxing as labour gets) before the final push. “Oh, baby. Oh baby. The reason I breathe is you”. Never mind you are about to go out of breath!

6. Better When I’m Dancing, Meghan Trainor

“Don’t think about it. Just move your body. Listen to the music. Sing, oh, ey, oh. Just move those left feet. Go ahead, get crazy Anyone can do it.” You are getting there, but you are not quite there! I won’t lie, I think this is the most depressing part of it, you are totally over labour, but labour is not over you! You can do it, you can do it!

7. I Am Coming Out, Diana Ross

By now this all you want to hear. “I am coming out. I am coming out. I am coming out. I want the world to know. Got to let it show… I am coming out. I am coming out. I am coming out.”

8. Push It, Salt -N- Pepa

When push comes to shove, no song has ever been more self-explanatory than this one. This is it, the only thing that will put an end to your pain is to push that baby out! “Now push it. Ah, push it, push it good. Ah, push it, push it real good. Ah, push it, push it good. Ah, push it, p-push it real good. Hey! Ow! Push it good! Oooh, baby, baby. Baby, baby”.

9. Happy, Pharrell Williams

“Sunshine, she’s here”! Or it could be ‘He’. It doesn’t matter right now, because you are happy. Baby is out. “Huh, because I’m happy. Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. Because I’m happy. Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth. Because I’m happy

10. All That She Wants, Ace of Base

OK, this may be premature during or just after labour and some may never come back for a second, but a lot of us do come back for seconds, thirds and more! “It’s a day for catching the sun. Just laying on the beach and having fun. She’s going to get you. All that she wants is another baby. She’s gone tomorrow, boy. All that she wants is another baby. All that she wants is another baby”.
