Little And Large Ways To Positively Impact Your Community
We all want those around us to be a little better off for having known us. This goes for our family, for our friends, but what about our communities at large? Though in a hectic modern world it can seem like the idea of the community is being left behind, if you close enough you will find that’s not so. Often unthanked by society at large, there are people contributing to keeping the places they love as well-cared for as possible. There are ways you can help, too. Regardless of how much time, assets, or skills you have at your disposal, you can make an impact on your community.
Spend your time taking care of it
Volunteering in the community is one of the easiest ways to get started. It’s very likely you will already find several ongoing efforts to help preserve not just the environment but help the people living in it. From community clean-ups to charity drives, there’s always a way to contribute your time to a volunteering effort near you. Volunteering can help you, too. You become much more aware of the issues facing your corner of society, but also the hope and positivity of those striving to help them.
Mentor those around you
If you have the time and you have skills to share, then you can play a much more major role in helping the children of your community, too. There are organisations like Big Brothers, Big Sisters that give adults the chance to mentor and provide a positive role model for children, including teenagers. If you have professional experience, you can provide the same kind of assistance and direction to young adults fresh out of education and looking for some idea of which way to go next. Our community is built on the success of those we help reach new heights and mentoring is one of the perfect ways to do just that.
Offer your skills, whatever they are
If you have a skill, there’s a good chance that a local charity of volunteer effort could make use of it. Whether this includes using your admin or project management career experience to help better organise them or even crafts and cookery skills to raise funds by hosting a class. When you want to think of ways to help the community, look to what skills you have first and foremost. Baking, management, woodwork, marketing, they all have a role to play. You can even host workshops (whether for free or for a fee) in local community centres. By teaching others in the community skills, you help make an improvement to their lives and they might go on to share those skills to others in their own corners of the community, too.
Provide services everyone needs
If you’re an entrepreneurial spirit or you’re looking for a career change, you can look to your own community too. There may be services that the families of that community needs. You can look at Benchmark Childcare Sales and help parents balance work and family by caring for their children. You can start a sports community centre that offers courses and facilities for everyone in the area. Just make sure that if you don’t have the skills to facilitate those businesses yourself that you hire those who are not only qualified to run them but those who actually care about the work they do.
Be friendly
If all you believe you have to offer is time, know that it can be more than enough. Loneliness is becoming a concern that’s growing in our community. Those it affects the most is the youngest and the oldest amongst us. We’ve already talked about mentoring, which can help. For the elderly, you can provide companionship social support. This might be as simple as sitting down to talk with the same person twice or thrice a week. It might seem like a very little step, but it can make a huge difference to that individual’s life. It’s worth getting involved in more community efforts and attending community events simply to socialise and build the idea of the bonds shared in your local area, too.
Raise funds for those who need it
Sometimes, people simply get down on their luck. Individuals, families, community organisations, they all need help from time to time. If you have the time and the willpower, you can really help those in need. Fundraising platforms like Go Fund Me have revolutionised the idea of giving to those who need it most. There have been successful fundraising campaigns to pay for life-changing surgery, to take care of families that have lost their home, to help community centres on the brink of collapse and much more. The power of a digital campaign through platforms like local Facebook pages can have a much broader reach than you might think. Nowadays, they may even be more successful than local efforts alone.
Donate
When you have something to give, give it. Donating money might be the most direct way to help out, but we all know we can’t donate every penny we get. You work for your money, you deserve it. But even when you can’t donate money, you are almost certain to be able to find something in the home that you can donate instead. Look at charity shop giving guides for ideas on what the most useful items they have are. Charity shops are important local institutions, but the truth is that they throw out most of the damaged clothes, safety devices, and old furniture they get. If you want to donate, donate good condition clothes, books, useful household items and the like.
You don’t have to become a champion of every cause of a martyr for the sake of a community. If everyone makes even a little effort to improve the lives of those around them, it can have a profound impact. Give and do what you can, and rest assured that you are playing a vital role even if it’s a small one.
