Miniland Mosaic Art

Is mosaic a lost art? Together with my 4 and 6-year-old sons, we put Miniland’s Mosaic Art to the test to find out.

Designed for children aged 3-7 years, this box of creativity is packed full of benefits for young kids: from developing fine motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination to boosting creativity and colour recognition.

Furthermore, Mosaic Art uses STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to develop skills such as critical analysis, problem solving & creativity.

Upon opening the box, I found a large plastic container. Pulling it out, I realised that all of the pieces (including the large activity game cards and the screwdriver itself) could fit into the container: making it convenient and portable, not to mention easy to store! All of the screws and pieces were in little bags, and my boys had fun arranging the pieces into the separate sections. The container itself is really sturdy, and the mosaic board which has all the holes in it for creating your artwork clicks onto the top of the container, forming the lid.

The idea is simple: use the screwdriver, screws & tiles to create patterns or pictures that your child dreams up, or use the activity cards to recreate an image from there.

The screwdriver can be split in half for easy storage and pushes together easily to use. It also has a clever feature to make it impossible for the screws to be over-tightened: it just clicks and continues to rotate when the screw is tight enough. The screws themselves have deep indents, making it easy for the screwdriver to stay seated as little hands learn how to operate the basic tool.

Master 4 can have a bit of a short fuse when it comes to anything that requires a bit of concentration or patience: so naturally, I thought I could predict exactly how this experiment was going to end. However, he seemed determined to master the Christmas Tree activity card, and I think the gorgeous colours really engaged him to focus on the task at hand. In fact, he surprised me further by staying seated as we worked together to complete the entire activity. He found the partial-stacking of some tiles a bit difficult to begin with, however picked it up quickly. His 6-year-old brother had no issues with partial-stacking though.

Miniland-Mosaic-art-toy-reviewWhilst there is the capability for building in both 2D and 3D, my boys so far have been intent on mastering 2D.

Knowing that there’s a whole other level of construction and learning just waiting to be discovered is exciting and means I can see this toy being one that will be a popular one for quite some time to come!

Mosaic Art is truly a great activity for both boys and girls, guaranteeing hours of entertainment!

stem-toy-review-mosaic-artThe activity cards include vehicles, animals, flower, robot, rocking horse & Christmas tree: something for everyone! Master 4 loved following the activity cards at first but has moved on to screwing in as many screws as possible before his brother wants a turn, and Master 6 loves to create his own pictures (such as the house pictured). Both boys still like to recreate the pictures at times too. It really is such a versatile and engaging activity: I am so impressed.

The only thing I’d suggest for Miniland is that perhaps they could include two of the Mosaic Boards, as I found that the kids were reluctant to pull apart their creations to make something else. Or have just the board available for purchase separately perhaps…

I highly recommend this toy for preschool-early primary children as it’s a toy that will grow with each child’s capabilities and creativity levels. I’m surprised that it’s something that Master 4 in particular still continues to seek out and enjoy, as he can be very easily bored with things. But Mosaic Art is something he loves, and it’s so exciting to see!
