Things to do in Dubbo; helping you find fun family activities

A popular holiday destination, there are many attractions and fun family activities in Dubbo.

Upon arriving in Dubbo and taking a drive around I have to admit that I was surprised at the large size of the city and in particular their shops! We have visited Dubbo twice now and each time enjoyed many of the family friendly attractions they have.

Here are some great family activities in Dubbo to enjoy.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo offers a fantastic family day out where you can cycle or drive through to see animals in larger, more natural environments. The outlay of the zoo is designed to help you imagine that you are on wide open plains. To get around it you can walk, ride your own bikes, drive or hire bikes or electric carts. Note: If walking or riding with younger children I would recommend that you break the zoo trip over the two days as it is a lot for them. If going with a big group of friends a good idea may be to have some adults and children follow those riding bikes in a car, allowing tired children (and adults) to swap the riding duties.

Follow the guide to the key areas and then take your time to walk through the cells and see memorabilia from when the gaol was used.

If you have boys or husbands who like trains or models, then Traintasia is an ideal venue. It features an interactive model railway display with Trains, Trams, Buses, Trucks and people, along with a hobby shop.

I recommend doing both tours as different family members will prefer different items. The Cathedral Cave houses the largest stalagmite in the whole world while the Phosphorus Mine is the location many archaeologists found megafauna bones.

Some other great family activities include:

  • Elston Water Park which is free of charge and offers great water fountains for the children to run through on a hot day.
  • The Western Plains Cultural Centre (which has Victoria Park behind it for children or all ages)
  • The Dubbo Observatory
  • If you are into gardens, there is the Japanese Garden and Sensory Garden (next to each other)

Some wet weather alternatives:

  • Kid Zoo – an indoor play centre
  • Dubbo Tenpin Bowling

There are many more and you can get a fantastic brochure on Dubbo including all the activities, parks and accommodation options sent to you from Dubbo council via the website: https://dubbo.com.au/visit
