It was fantastic when we bought my daughter her bicycle (around 3yrs old). She enjoyed riding so much I spent most of the first two weeks on the driveway with her for at least an hour’s riding everyday. My husband then bought a bike so that he could go riding with her at the local track. This was a great idea except that my little son (almost 1.5) got very jealous when his daddy and sister went riding. He wanted to ride so badly, so we started to look at how he could be involved so that we could make this a family affair. Our local bike shop recommended we get a WeeRide Deluxe LTD seat which we could put onto hubby’s bike, so my little boy could ride with daddy and enjoy the fun as well.

One of the things that I liked with the WeeRide seat is that your child sits in front of you, so they really get to experience the ride and can see the surroundings.

For me, it also meant that I can see my baby and know that he is okay. It feels safer having him enclosed between my arms and you can talk to them and hear what they are saying while you are riding.

I was so excited when we received our WeeRide Deluxe LTD seat! I got hubby to install it on his bike that afternoon (thankfully a Friday) when he came home from work and we took it for a test drive the very next day! Unfortunately, my new found enthusiasm for the seat was met by apprehension and fits of screaming from my son. Oh dear!

As many other mums know, sometimes the best policy involves a little bit of bribing… I promised that if he got on the seat and stopped crying I would give him a lolly when we got home. This calmed him down long enough for us to strap him into the seat, at which point I told hubby to ride like the wind. The outcome – he stopped crying and enjoyed it. My daughter and I followed hubby around the track and I have to say I experienced a moment of pure joy. I don’t ever remember having so much fun riding a bike! I felt so free and exhilarated by the newfound activity that we could all enjoy. There was also delight at the fact that it was something that we could do often and it would be great on our family holidays. I’m so inspired I have decided we are going to visit Dubbo and ride around the zoo!

Three rides on the WeeRide seat later and my son now begs for “More, more” and gets very upset when the riding is over for the day.

He asks almost every day to go on the bike and we have now moved his WeeRide seat onto my bike so that I can take the children riding during the week when hubby is at work. I have to admit that I am totally obsessed with the idea of riding with the children now; it is such a fun family activity!

My Tips:

If you are thinking of getting one of these seats or of riding with your children – do it early so that you maximise your return out of it. The seat is suitable from the age of 12months. Getting them used to it when they are younger will also solve any fear/anxiety issues at the start of use as well.
Although it is easy to install you could ask your bike store if they would check that you have done this correctly for greater peace of mind.
Dress your child very warmly when you are going to ride. Since they sit in front of you, they do get all the wind hitting them directly and they can get cold.
If both you and your partner want the ability to ride with your child, you can order a spare bar so that you can easily move the seat from bike to bike.
