Wholey Food Breakfast Smoothie
The Wholey Breakfast Smoothie offers a dry mixture of oats, nuts and seeds which you combine with milk to create a smoothie.
We love making smoothies for breakfast, so I welcomed the opportunity to test a product that will enhance the health benefits of our smoothies. It also offers a quick ‘on the go’ meal option for me when I have to rush out for meetings.
There are two ways to create the smoothie. You can simply place the Wholey Foods mixture and your milk into a shaker and shake it until combined or add it with milk and fruit to a blender. We tested both ways with both the Vanilla and Cocoa flavours. The shaker is quick and easy – perfect when on the run, however the blender option offers a more substantial meal as the fruit makes it more fulfilling. The flavour of each smoothie is nice with quite a nutty aftertaste.
You can however feel particles from the nuts and grains, so texturally you get a different sensation to normal smoothies and this created mixed results with my children. At first, I thought that this occurred as we utilised the shaker, however when testing with the blender we got the same result. Wholey Foods actually advertise this on their can “Because our mix is full of natural wholefood ingredients, you’ll notice lots of little tasty natural bits in your smoothie.” I then noticed on the tin that the mixture for children should be half of the adult mixture. The particle texture was reduced and my children preferred this mixture option to the previous. I am going to continue integrating the mixture into our smoothies in the smaller amounts for now to get the children used to the texture.
My son plays a lot of sport and last year we found that over the soccer season, all the training drained his energy. A friend of mine suggested that I look into getting a sports drink to help him replenish the vitamins and minerals that he lost during sport.
When I came across the Wholey Protein Boosted Breakfast Smoothie I was excited that this could be a healthy answer to help boost his energy and stamina. When comparing it to a commercially available and similar sport drink that is also added to milk; I was pleased to find that based on an Average Quantity per 100g; the Wholey Smoothie offered more Energy and more Protein while the sodium content was 75% less. The sugar within the Wholey Smoothie was 55g less than the alternative at only 2.9g per 100. Importantly, the sugar within the Wholey Smoothie is naturally occurring sugar from the oats, nuts and seeds. Hands down the Wholey Smoothie is a much healthier alternative and a great way to provide increased Energy and Protein to your child’s diet.
In addition to using this mixture as a smoothie; I incorporated the Whole Foods Breakfast Smoothie into my Apple Cinnamon Muffins, substituting the milk in the recipe for my Wholey Foods enriched milk. The kids had no idea and doing this made my muffins so much heathier for them. A winning idea if you have fussy children.
Personally, I think that the Wholey Foods Breakfast Smoothie is a good idea and I encourage you to try it. If your children don’t like the texture, you can reduce the amount of smoothie mixture or could always have it as your go-to meal option when in a rush. You can also add it to your snack recipes to make your children’s snacks healthier.
Update (15 July 2020): Unfortunately, it appears that Wholey Foods products are no longer available.
