Will A Humidifier Make Things Wet

Will A Humidifier Make Things Wet (And The Commonly Associated Issues)

Well, the short answer here is:

Probably not.

But, it does depend on some things.

Humidifiers can be an ally in the fight against allergies and discomfort.

But:

They can also be an enemy.

Your humidifier could very well make things wet. Particularly if you’re using the incorrect size for the room, or if you’re not measuring your humidity levels and letting it run for too long.

Don’t Humidifiers Auto Shut Down?

Some do, yes.

But many models will just keep running until they run out of water.

Or you turn them off.

And if you’re not actively monitoring your humidity levels, you could be setting yourself up for problems.

The best way to monitor your humidity levels is by purchasing something called a hygrometer.

It’ll give you a relatively accurate idea of the humidity levels in the room you place it in.

Of course, some humidifiers do have a humidistat that measures humidity levels and helps it moderate.

Cheaper models will not have such a feature.

Common Issues That Can Cause Moisture Buildup

There are a lot of things you can do (and later correct) that can cause moisture to build up in an area.

Attending to these issues will help you troubleshoot what might be causing all this wetness.

It’s The Wrong Size

This is one of the most frequent issues.

People just don’t use the right humidifier for the right room.

Usually, they’re too small to make any meaningful impact.

But in other cases, the humidifier is simply too big and adds too much moisture to the air.

Manufacturers will normally set recommendations for room sizes based on the model.

You should do research before purchasing one of these.

But, generally:

Portable humidifiers are good for bedrooms and small garages.

Larger humidifiers work better for big living rooms and similar areas.

It’s Too Close To The Floor

Does a humidifier wet the floor?

(Yes, it can.)

Manufacturers normally recommend that you place your humidifier on a surface a few meters from the ground.

This is for two reasons:

Humidifiers can get dirty much more quickly if placed on the ground.

And humidifiers rely on breezes and other ventilation sources to spread moisture.

(if it’s too close to the ground, it’ll just settle on the floor.)

These devices need to be placed on stable and elevated surfaces.

It’s Too Close To Things

Most manufacturers will also recommend that you keep your humidifiers distanced.

Ideally:

It should be kept central.

But if you can do that, just make sure it’s a few meters away from surfaces such as walls.

Not doing so can cause moisture to build up on walls and other nearby surfaces.

And the moisture ultimately settles in one or a few spots.

Excessive moisture can lead to damage to your paint and walls in the long term.

There Are Many Moisture Absorbing Surfaces

Particularly if these surfaces are close to the humidifier.

Moisture will get captured by these surfaces and cause wetness.

(Wood, fabric, and some plastics can collect moisture.)

Not only can these create mildew and mold.

But it can also prevent the humidity from being adequately spread around the room.

This ultimately defeats the purpose of the humidifier.

To rectify this, make sure that your humidifier is placed away (or elevated) from these kinds of surfaces.

Your Humidifier Is Malfunctioning

Nothing lasts forever.

(I’m talking about you Game Of Thrones. And what kind of ending was that?)

Your humidifier, like Game Of Thrones, might be having a bad ending.

It could be going haywire, misinterpreting humidity levels and generally causing havoc.

These devices can also overheat, causing a build-up of too much moisture in the air.

(As a rule of thumb, never place anything on top of a humidifier, as this can contribute to overheating.)

If you’ve ruled out other causes, this might very well be the reason.

And you might want to think about investing in a new humidifier

Why You Should Attend To Excessive Moisture

Aside from letting mold breed, what other problems arise from moisture buildup?

Well, you could slip and fall in moisture is accumulating on your floors.

But that’s not likely.

If your machine is producing excessively high humidity levels (60% and over).

This could bring rise to health issues, such as:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • And overheating (nobody likes heat stroke)

This isn’t even mentioning how uncomfortable it is to sweat continually.

Ideally, you want your humidity levels to stay between 30% and 50%.

In fact, dust mites die at levels between 40% and 50%.

It’s not about getting rid of humidity or having lots of humidity.

But rather, it’s about maintaining a balance.

Will A Dehumidifier Help?

A Woman Sits On A Floor And Powers On A Humidifier

It’s counterproductive to run both a humidifier and a dehumidifier.

But:

If you do run into the problem of having excessive amounts of humidity in your house.

(Either due to a faulty humidifier or weather changes.)

Then you could use a dehumidifier to restore the balance.

Humidifiers work by releasing mist into the air and increasing the number of water droplets.

Dehumidifiers work, on the other hand, by cooling air.

This helps to remove moisture.

It’s Unlikely To Be A Problem

Most humidifiers don’t have that much of an impact, and so you’re not likely to see your curtains drenched any time soon.

But:

If you are noticing moisture build-up, then the reasons I listed are important to consider.

I hope that you found all this helpful!

Frequently Asked Questions

A Woman Smells Humidified Air After Humidifier

It’s unlikely that your humidifier will get everything wet unless it is too large for your own. Or, if it has been placed too close to objects in the room.

Does a humidifier increase moisture?

A humidifier does increase moisture. Its whole purpose is to add moisture to the air and by doing so, increase humidity.
