How A Baby Swaddle Wrap And These 6 Things Can Soothe Your Newborn

If you’re a new parent, you know exactly how it feels to see your baby cry, and you don’t know what to do. You get overwhelmed and feel helpless. It’s a lot to deal with, but that’s normal. Remember, you’re not alone and there are a lot of parents out there who feel exactly the same way. It’s part of the journey and you’ll learn how to go about it along the way. It’s fine to ask for help and take a break once in a while when you need it. Keep in mind that your baby needs a happy and healthy parent.

Babies cry for different reasons and you need to determine the specific reason why so that you can find the proper solution.

  • Hungry – Most newborns feed every two to three hours for about two ounces of milk per feeding session. And you’d know when the baby is hungry if their fists are clenched, or they’re opening their mouth and making smacking sounds or thumb sucking.
  • Gassy Stomach – It’s possible your baby has gas on their belly from the feeding. You can remedy it by letting your baby burp.
  • Diaper Change – There could be poop or pee on their bottoms and they demand diaper change.
  • Colic – Excessive crying that lasts at least three hours, your newborn could be a colic baby so you’ll need to visit your pediatrician to be sure.
  • Too Cold Or Too Hot – You’d know if they feel warm or cold simply by touching their skin.
  • Sick – Observe your baby and check their temperature and call the pediatrician for any signs of coughs, colds, or fever, among others.

If anything, always trust your instincts. Here are a few things you can do to soothe your baby:

Make Your Baby As Comfortable As Possible

Try to swaddle your baby. Use the baby swaddle wrap method to comfort your newborn baby. This is to mimic that feeling of security similar to the mother’s womb. This is also an excellent way to put the baby to sleep longer. You can also try the skin-to-skin technique or also known as kangaroo care. This is usually done to premature babies. Moreover, you might want to check if your baby needs a diaper change.

Put On Noise

Newborns are not used to silence. When your baby was still in your womb, they heard noises like your heart beating and your muffled voice, basically whatever noise your body makes. Try to mimic that noise, otherwise, you can also play with white noise by turning on the fan, vacuum cleaner, hairdryer, or play from your playlist of baby lullabies. You can also make the shushing sound or sing a song to calm your baby down.

Check If Your Baby Is Colic

Your baby could be fussy because they feel uncomfortable. You can lay your baby on the bed and gently do bicycle kicks to release gas from their stomach. Most newborns tend to be colic babies, and they frequently cry for hours. This is quite normal and will stop when they turn four months older and up. You need to consult with a pediatrician and see if they can give you medication for your baby.

Try The Hold Method Used By Most Pediatricians

Pick your baby up. Gently take your baby’s right or left arm, put it in front of the other, and hold it in place. Use your other arm to support your baby’s bottom. And then slowly sway your baby up and down. Keep your baby at a forty-five-degree angle so you can take full control. If you set them up, they might tilt their head way back and could fall. This technique always works even after they have gotten their vaccination shot.

Run A Warm Quick Bath

Some babies naturally like the water. You can calm them down by running them a quick warm bath. Get your baby’s bath essentials ready: bathtub, washcloth, bath towel, or receiving blanket, diaper, and a change of clothes. Use mild soap and lukewarm water. You can use your elbow to see if the water temperature is just right and suitable for a newborn.

Take Your Baby Out

Changing the environment is also good for babies to lessen their boredom. Go for a walk and take them out on a stroller or a baby carrier. Even these tiny humans can tell the difference, the lighting, the sound, and the place’s atmosphere. It’ll also benefit you to take that moment and use the opportunity to go out. Take a breather, and enjoy the outdoors with your little one. You don’t need to be at home all day to be a good parent.

Conclusion

There is nothing wrong with trial and error to see what would work best for you and your baby. Always trust your gut and do what you think is best for them. As long as it doesn’t harm them in any way, then you should be fine. Otherwise, if you have done all you could to soothe your baby and nothing seems to work, don’t hesitate to ask for help.
