Boredom busters for a Rainy Day
Cabin fever quickly sets in at my house on a rainy day as we try to work out how on earth to keep occupied while indoors without driving mum and dad crazy.
Here are some fun rainy day activities to keep your little ones entertained when the weather is wet
- Lego & Duplo are such fun activities that all children seem to love. Girls and boys alike can stay amused while developing skills as they build and create their very own masterpieces. Lego is also a great way for parents to play with their children easily as they help build and create scenes for your child’s imagination.
- Create a House/School/Pretend Scenario. With school aged children, you can get them to recreate their days by giving them a pretend roster, or by printing some worksheets that they can fill in and pretend they are in school doing/teaching their friends. Simply by setting up chairs in a line you can create a train for them to ride, or by moving pillows and other items around you can create ‘rooms’ and their own house.
- Movie & Popcorn. A rainy day favourite. When it is cold and wet outside it is great to snuggle up together on the couch and watch a movie with a bowl of popcorn. Let the children take it in turns to choose the movie or sit down and explain an old favourite movie of yours to them. See some of the latest movie and DVD reviews
- Build a Fort. Some sheets, chairs even the dining room table can be manoeuvred into position to create their own fort where they can play in ‘peace’ and have their own space.
- Board Games & Puzzles. This can be trickier depending on age. I have found for the much younger children, puzzles are great, while the older children excel at games like Skipbo/Uno/Candyland and Go Home.
- Baking. A great way to get your children involved in the kitchen and to create some tasty/healthy snacks for over the holidays is to bake with the children. They can help add ingredients, mix the batter or simply watch and then lick the bowl; either way they generally enjoy the process and the results. Click here for great snack recipes
- Puppet Show. Depending upon your talents and/or toys, you can make up a puppet show easily by drawing/creating characters with old socks. An old box can have some material curtains and become the puppet theatre.
Craft. My daughter loves craft so we are always looking for simple, not messy craft ideas. I love it when she creates something from her own imagination; however have found making cards a great activity that can then be kept for upcoming birthdays. All you need are A5 size pieces of paper/cardboard, stickers, glitter glue, textas or anything your child likes using.
