The first thing I do when trying to come up with gift ideas for my kids’ presents is to get them to write a “Letter to Santa”.

When they were little we did a little ‘Letter to Santa ritual’. That involved getting them to write a letter (with parents help) to Father Christmas and going for a walk around the block to put it in the nearest letterbox. It was also an opportunity to bring up topics such as gratitude, compassion and other values associated with the Christmas spirit.

The mystery of that letter going all the way to the North Pole was endlessly fascinating and, for many weeks, it became their favourite topic.

“Mum, how far is the North Pole?”.

“Dad, what is Santa getting the letter in time to do all the shopping?”

And a few days later, “Do you think Santa has received our letter yet?”.

The non-stop repetitive questions were, at times, exhausting, but now that our kids don’t quite believe anymore, we miss the questioning.

We have though persisted and kept the ‘letter to Santa’ ritual! They might roll their eyes when we ask them to write the letter but we tell them “no letter, no present”.

They have also become more innovative with their letter. Their latest invention, being quite computer-savvy like many other kids, was to prepare a PowerPoint Presentation.

They are smart. They know they are more likely to get the presents they want if they write a letter!

It is a win-win as they provide ideas for parents and family members. Not to mention, avoiding the guessing game makes life much easier for us, although we try to throw in a surprise present or two.

To make life easier for you, here’s a fun downloadable Letter to Santa template – complete with “postage paid North Pole stamp”. Enjoy!
