nikon d5600 review

Nikon D5600 an entry level DSLR camera, perfect for families

Investing in a good DSLR camera has always been important to me. I want to know that when we go on our holidays or have special events, that my camera will be able to capture the memories clearly and without issue.

In addition to this, with much of my work now requiring good quality photographs; the need to upgrade my camera became more apparent. Some of the key features I liked about the Nikon D5600 was that it would make my job easier as I could snap quality selfies with the ability to use my phone as the remote. Secondly, it offered WIFI connection between my phone and camera, allowing instant access to the photos taken with Social Media sharing options.

The Nikon D5600 is aimed at photographers looking for the step up from the basic point and shoot camera’s.  It offers an entry level DSLR with greater creative control and a few additional features to the Nikon D3300 series. With a price point over $1,000, this was not a decision we made lightly. We decided to purchase the camera in the end as we viewed it as a worthwhile investment, based on the quality and performance of our previous Nikon D50 camera which was still working well after 12 years!

The Challenge

nikon-d5600-reviewTo test the Nikon D5600 I gave it the ultimate challenge.

To be my only tool in our Autumn Winter 2017 Fashion Shoot. The Fashion Shoot is extremely important for my business, and if this camera could provide perfect photos; then not only was it a worthwhile investment, but also a great business decision. To test the ability of the camera, the entire AW17 Fashion shot was shot by remote control on my phone, or by myself, my mother or my 9-year old daughter. None of us have had any photographic experience (other than point and shoot) or lessons and other than basic adjustments for brightness/contrast, the photos have not been doctored. Take a look at all of the Children’s Fashion Shoot and the Women’s Fashion Shoot pictures to see what this camera can achieve.

Here are some of the Key Features I liked about the Nikon D5600:

Remote Photography

By far my favourite tool. I can line up the camera and shoot the picture when everything and everyone is ready. The camera has always connected to the phone easily and when you push the button to take the photo, you hear a beep to

acknowledge you have activated the camera and have 2 seconds before the photo is taken. I love this feature, both for my work and for family photographs, as you can get everyone into place and take a number of photos without having to run back and forth to the camera. This is much more effective when children are involved.

SnapBridge

While the app is a little cumbersome, it is an ideal way to connect your phone and camera to transfer images. I found that at times the connections were a little slow, however the features within the app worked well and definitely made the photographic experience easier. I am sure that Nikon will improve the app and its abilities over time. This is only a small criticism as it was still easy to use and did the job it said it would. I like that it uses a low frequency to transfer the images which does not drain the camera battery.

Inside the lens

The Nikon D5600 offers 24.2 megapixels with an EXPEED 4 image-processing engine. It also boasts an ISO range of 100-25,600 to capture beautiful, vibrant images. It is easy to change the manual features of the camera by turning the dial to M, A, S, P settings and then utilising the second dial to change the settings. I like that the camera settings are clearly displayed on the LCD monitor and you can adjust them easily to suit your preferences. You can also play around with your photographs by changing the Aperture or the ISO range to learn how this affects each photograph – perfect when learning to take better photos. The Nikon DSLR Camera D5600 lens now comes with Vibration Reduction (VR) technology to minimise lens aberrations and distortions which I appreciate as I will take all the help I can get to create a great photo.

LCD Monitor

nikon-d5600-reviewThe LCD Monitor can swivel up to 180 degrees, which is useful to see images and information clearly, especially when outdoors. For those photographers travelling or wanting to instantly share great moments, you can trim, resize and/or apply filters on the camera. The LCD Monitor is touch screen and easy to use.

Split -Second Moments

With the touch of one button on the side of the D5600, you can take continuous shots as a rate of approx. 5 frames per second. Not only was this really easy to do, it is great to watch the sequence of events: children chasing each other, the race finish, etc. When dealing with young children or babies, it can lead to getting the perfect picture as it captures their reactions changing.

Convenient Flexibility

nikon-d5600The new Nikon body offers a lightweight camera that is easy to hold. I love that you can easily purchase NIKKOR accessories to change the camera’s abilities to suit your requirements. In addition to the 18-55VR lens that came with the Nikon D5600 we purchased the NIKKOR 55-300 Lens. We have found that the bigger lens is fantastic when looking to capture closer details of items far away. Perfect when on holiday, sightseeing or watching a sports game and trying to capture your child’s facial expressions. You could also put on a microphone for your home videos or lighting accessories. It is amazing what can be done nowdays with a DSLR Camera!
